Course Description

The study afternoon will be conducted in workshop style, with opportunities for active learning and engagement. It will be facilitated by Logan Van Lessen, a Consultant Midwife with expertise in promoting labour and birth in water.

The afternoon will include an exploration of the current evidence for labour and birth and in water, and how midwives can support women's waterbirth choices in a variety of settings.

Logan Van Lessen trained as a midwife in the 1980. She is highly experienced and worked for many years as a community midwife, supporting women with homebirth and waterbirths. She then took up several management posts including a year long secondment as deputy Head of Midwifery at Milton Keynes. She completed her Masters in Midwifery in 2007.

As a matron for inpatient services at the Whittington Hospital she led the project on partners staying overnight postnatally. This project won the RCM award for Better Births in 2015. She was nominated for, and won, the Supervisor of the Year award for London, 2014.

Logan currently works as a Consultant Midwife in Public health which includes a teaching remit at Middlesex university. She works collaboratively with public health in Islington and Haringey and is a member of various steering groups and boards across both boroughs which include Early Years, Family Nurse Partnership and Smokefree Alliance for Camden/Islington.

Logan is passionate about women's experiences of maternity care and supports holistic and individual approaches to midwifery care for women and babies.
