Course Description

What did it mean to live as a woman in seventeenth-century England? Many writings from the period present a very prescribed and limited female experience, but looking at women’s own words gives a more complex picture. Using contemporary examples of women’s writing, we will explore aspects of women’s lives, such as politics, friendship, education, religion, and domestic life. This will allow us to explore notions of femininity in the seventeenth century, and how women negotiated their place in the world.
