Course Description

Both Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre are recognised as classics of Victorian fiction - powerful, complex and unique. But how did the Brontë children, living in virtual isolation in rural Haworth, become such perceptive chroniclers of wilful passion, domestic cruelty and epic struggle? Taking family life at the Brontë parsonage as its starting point, this course will reveal how Anne, Emily, Charlotte and Branwell created a childhood fantasy world which played a crucial role in the development of their literary works.
