Course Description

The late Middle Ages saw wars, the Black Death, and the Peasants’ Revolt. In this time of upheaval and uncertainty, one of the most popular literary genres was the dream vision, in which writers let their creative imagination run riot, weaving fantasy and allegory to satirise the political mayhem of their day. From Chaucer’s proto-sci-fi dreamscapes to Langland’s searing visions, Gower’s mythical mirages to Hoccleve’s sleepless nights, we will follow the writers seeking sense in a world turned upside-down.
