Course Description

Accompanied by the music of Johann Strauss and other ‘romantic’ composers, we shall try to analyse this ‘fin-de-siecle’ imperial capital which produced ideas that were to shape the ‘West’. Vienna became a centre of opposites: ‘traditionalism’ and ‘modernism’. The Vienna Circle launched unusual expressions of art, architecture, music and philosophies, together with a new understanding of human behaviour unravelled by Sigmund Freud. This ‘cradle of modernism’ provoked extremes of reaction: Hitler assumed the high ground by 1938. Thus, a ‘melting pot’ of cultures, including wealth, poverty, Jew and Christian, and unbounded liberalism, became a reflection of Vienna.
