Course Description

Many regard the Spanish Civil War as a struggle between democracy and fascism - a precursor of the Second World War itself. However, the conflict in Spain had many distinctive features, which this course will investigate in detail. Its origins and causes, the division of Spain in to Republican and Nationalist camps, the military uprising in 1936, stalemate from 1937 to 1938, and Nationalist breakthrough and victory will all be thoroughly analysed. Finally, the enduring perceptions of this tragic conflict will be carefully considered.
