Course Description

This module analyses medieval to modern texts and major works of historical fiction through the filter of modern cinematic approximation, appropriation, celebration and satire. ‘Period settings’ are often invoked as filmic shorthand for regressive attitudes, or to support romanticised ideas of ‘golden’ ages – how do literature and film enable us to make sense of both past and present? Can alterity and archaism illuminate contemporary concerns? Is emphatic historical accuracy necessarily more authentic than comical anachronism? What is historical fiction?
