Course Description

Dorothy Wordsworth, remembered chiefly as the cherished companion of her famous brother William, was also a writer, of prose rather than poetry. Her journals kept at Alfoxden and Grasmere detail the daily lives of the Wordsworths and their circle and the composition of Wordsworth’s greatest poems to which she made a contribution as critic and arguably, collaborator. Her intense observation of nature and obsessive love of her brother framed her life. We will discuss excerpts from the journals, and contemporary reports of the Wordsworth household in the context of Dorothy’s own life and William’s poetic development.
