Course Description

The nude is a major tradition in western art. This module will explore how it has been used to express anatomical knowledge, ideals of beauty and other human qualities. It will examine the nude in the fine arts of painting and sculpture and its inclusion in history painting, allegorical and religious art, portraiture and decorative arts. You will learn to recognise and analyse issues of sexuality, gender, feminism, class and race that are raised by artworks featuring nude figures.
