Course Description

For centuries Poland was the largest state in Europe, highly civilised, democratic and tolerant to a multi-ethnic population. This course examines 10 seminal moments in Polish history including its emergence in 966; the creation of the Polish Commonwealth in 1367 (Union of Lublin), its destruction by partition in the late eighteenth century; and how the Polish nation preserved its unique identity despite prolonged occupation and repression, two world wars and a communist dictatorship up to 1990.
