Course Description

Fairy tales are ‘good to think with’. This module looks at the rich cultural resource of fairy tales and considers why and how we read them, their purpose and significance, and their psychological impact for individuals and societies making sense of the world. Tales of wonder and magic provide materials for survival, insight and understanding of oneself and others, and awaken us to the joy of the marvellous. We will look at a variety of tales from different cultures and some of the literary theory that decodes them. No previous knowledge necessary but a willingness to be enchanted is an asset.
