Course Description

This course offers an introduction to the ways in which disease and disability have influenced English society, examining how sickness has been interpreted and represented. This course uses a variety of sources, literary and historical, to explore the cultural understanding of illness. Moving from Anglo-Saxon leech-craft through medieval miracles to more scientific medical study, our sessions will follow the cultural changes in the comprehension and representation of illness and how these shaped responses to the sick.
