Course Description

The First Folio slots Shakespeare’s plays into three neat generic categories: comedy, tragedy, and history. The plays themselves, however, repeatedly blur generic boundaries in ways that enrich both their meaning on the page and their performance on the stage. This course looks at three of Shakespeare’s later plays - Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest - which found him (re)engaging also with ‘romance’, adding to the richness and instability of the generic mix, and resulting in some of his greatest playwriting.
