Course Description

In February 1917 the Romanov dynasty, which had recently celebrated 300 years of ruling Russia, was swept from power by a mass revolt. In October its democratic successor, the Provisional Government, was overthrown by a tiny minority, the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin. Was the overthrow of the Old Regime inevitable? What inspired the February revolutionaries? How can we explain the shift in public opinion by October? And would there have been a second revolution without Lenin?
