Course Description

This course will examine the changes of the paradigm of artistic expression in Russia in the eighteenth century, following the westernising reforms of Peter I, and look into the development of the various art forms, profoundly affected by the reforms in the course of Russia’s long eighteenth century. The introduction of allegory into painting and sculpture, portraiture as a new genre, baroque interiors and the opulence of palatial constructions and collections will be discussed and abundantly illustrated.
