Course Description

122 days of horror, 275,000 British casualties and a measly advance of five miles, the Battle of Passchendaele provides the iconic images of the Great War. Mud, blood and futility mark a major indictment of British political and military leadership. We will examine contemporary testimony and recent research to examine key questions. Did the battle need to be fought at all? Were planning and tactics as incompetent as they appear in hindsight? What was the real significance of Passchendaele?
