Course Description

The technical innovation and representation of modernity in nineteenth-century French painting has long been appreciated, but neither of these issues has been given very extensive consideration in relation to English painting of the same period. This course will explore the similarities and differences between the histories of painting on both sides of the channel. It will give particular attention to paint surfaces and the visual constitution of artworks showing that those aspects can carry important meanings.
