Course Description

When investors speculate with their own money and fail, it is a personal loss. When they speculate with other people’s money, the speculation often leads to a crisis borne by the central bank. This course takes a historical look at financial panics since the Dutch tulip mania of 1634, and considers the human factors making swindles possible. As Charles Ponzi, of the infamous scheme, said: ‘When a man’s vision is fixed on one thing, he might as well be blind’.
