Course Description

The Normans played a major role in European history. Famous for their martial spirit, they conquered lands both in Europe and the Middle East. This course aims to study the development of this people from their Viking origins to their establishment as kings of England, and rulers of Sicily, Southern Italy, and of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. It will consider textual and visual evidence, and focus on the political, military, and cultural changes that they brought to their new dominions.
