Course Description

Seen as one of the greatest American novels, this half-day course will explore the varied historical and critical contexts of Herman Melville’s whaling epic, Moby-Dick. Published in 1851, it is a text both ahead of its time - offering explorations of capitalism, queerness, race and masculinity, and of its time - on the cusp of the civil war and steeped in the ideology of American expansionism. Read it in advance, and come discuss its continuing relevance to American and literary culture!
