Course Description

Throughout history and across cultures the ‘mad’ have been separated from the ‘normal’, and today there is a huge rise in the diagnosis of mental illness/disorders globally. But there have been, and are, many different ideas about madness. To examine the core question ‘what is madness?’ ideas from psychiatry, social-history, sociology, psychology, and anthropology are applied to the autobiographical stories of those considered mad (who reveal their own ideas) in the past and in the present.
