Course Description

In this module the relationship between madness and murder is analysed. It also introduces students to ‘critical thinking’. Six key questions will be addressed: What is madness? What is murder? Who commits murder? Why commit murder? Why is murder devastating? Why are madness and murder fascinating? This questioning includes examining the difference between madness, badness and normality, and exploring understandings from different cultures and epochs. Ideas from sociology, psychology, anthropology, and ‘scientific psychiatry’ will be applied to specific case studies.
