Course Description

This module will examine the reality behind the popular image of the knight, moving from the early Saxon origins to crusaders and beyond. Different sources will offer insights into the place of knights, whether on the battlefield or jousting in peacetime. The role of chivalric codes will be considered, exploring how and why these behavioural guides arose and how far they were followed. We will also assess the lasting legacy of chivalry, considering the re-use of the imagery of the medieval knight.
