Course Description

Most people in York will know Rowntree & Co.’s history, that the early company faced competition from other Quaker family confectioners, that it pioneered brands but also needed to offer alternatives to rival brands, and that by the 1900s the company was moving production from various smaller premises among York’s streets to a mass-production estate. Economists have labelled the company’s nineteenth- and twentieth century progress a marketing revolution. This course looks at Rowntree & Co.’s marketing tactics, brands and advertising, and a variety of Rowntree customer-loyalty campaigns.
