Course Description

‘It is a truth, universally acknowledged...’

Jane Austen’s sharp, incisive and witty novels do, enticingly, still seem to ring with universal truths about love, character, and the nature of literature itself. In the 200th anniversary year of her death, this course examines Austen’s well-loved and lesser-known novels - from Sense and Sensibility to Sanditon - exploring her historical and social context, her ingenious construction of character, the truths that underpin her comedy, and her works on the screen, to discover how her novels live on today.
