Course Description

This module examines historical developments in moral philosophy from the perspective of both the Analytic and Continental traditions. Instead of examining the foundations, theory, and practice of morality in isolation, the focus is on the individual contributions of Aristotle, Francis Hutcheson, Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill, Emmanuel Levinas, John Rawls, RM Hare, and Jürgen Habermas. The module provides an introduction to the ethical writings of these philosophers by means of both analysis and interpretation, exploring issues such as the existence of a moral sense and the extent to which genetic engineering is permissible.
