Course Description

The physical body is a landscape that can be explored to reveal the ideas in a work of fiction and the anxieties and obsessions of the society that produced it. This course will look at three classic ‘horrible bodies’ - Shelley’s Frankenstein, Stevenson’s Jekyll and Hyde and Wells’ Invisible Man - and consider how representation of the physical is used to further plot, character and dark themes. We will look briefly at contemporary bodies, particularly crime fiction, and the uses to which the damaged and distorted body is put.
