Course Description

Known as La Serenissima, the Republic of Venice was a major financial and maritime power during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. From its humble origins as a refuge from invading barbarians to its dominance of the Mediterranean and its rule of Constantinople, Venice has fascinated visitors and historians alike. This course will explore the history of the ‘Queen of the Adriatic’ from the sixth to the sixteenth centuries, focusing on the city’s politics, commerce and art.
