Course Description

This course introduces German art through twenty paintings, prints and sculptures from the twelfth to the twenty-first century. We will encounter the technically astounding and emotionally charged works of Dürer, Holbein and Richter, alongside less familiar masters. German art is often accused of relishing the ugly. We will examine this idea, as well as the ways artists and critics have used Germany’s art to define Germany and its people before and after the tumultuous events of the twentieth century.
