Course Description

This course will look behind the Victorian front door to examine the realities of life for Victorian families. Was father strict and remote? Were children seen but not heard? Were women bound by the constraints of Victorian respectability? What happened to single women and older people? How important was class? We will examine the records and first-hand accounts of real-life families to discover the truth behind the stereotypes. No previous knowledge is required.
