Course Description

David Foster Wallace was one of the most inventive, ingenious, and perceptive writers of his generation. In this course, we will read his masterpiece, Infinite Jest, hailed as one of the great American novels. Set in the early twenty-first century in a North American dystopia, the novel centres on a junior tennis academy, a substance-abuse recovery facility, and a Quebecois separatist movement. In these disparate but connected settings, the novel addresses a kaleidoscope of themes, including freedom, the self, and what it is to lead a good life.
