Course Description

Are pets companions, status symbols or playthings? This course will explore the cultural and social significance of pets in contemporary British society. Despite animals often being taken for granted as a concern of biology, boundaries between humans and animals are created in various ways in everyday life. We will focus on the meaningful relationships engaged in with pets, as an example of the way in which animals are woven into our interactions and identities.
