Course Description

The period beginning just before the Great War through to just after World War Two constitutes a diverse and experimental period for American literature and one fraught with social and political upheaval. Writers were not only interrogating various literary aesthetics of the nineteenth century to experiment with modernist language and form but also exploring the potential of the novel to inform (and perform) politically. This course will look at shorter novels and short stories which harness this creative tension. A reading list will be provided in advance.
