Course Description

The artistic skills of the Byzantine Empire can be admired in Western Europe, in cities that were culturally influenced by Byzantium. These include Ravenna and, in Sicily, Palermo and Monreale. This course will study Byzantine art, especially mosaics, as they appear in these Western cities. By analysing a number of images, the course aims to provide an understanding of the iconography of Byzantine mosaics. In addition, it will offer an explanation of the materials and techniques required in their execution.
