Course Description

Butcher Haig, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army on the Western Front (1915-18) has been vilified as an incompetent blockhead, blind to the changing nature of warfare and unforgivably careless of the lives of his soldiers, the model for the crass General Melchett of Blackadder Goes Forth. But this negative view has recently been challenged by Gary Sheffield and others who argue that Haig played a pivotal role in defeating Germany. We will critically examine both sides of the debate.
