Course Description

Progress within civilisations has, generally, been due to an abandonment of perhaps long-held traditions. We shall try to rationalise this principle, especially within the context of Europe and an interaction of ideas across the arts and sciences. Contributions by the ancient Greeks and Aristotelianism shall be explored, thereafter, the continuing influence of John Lock, Jean Jaques Rousseau, Friedreich Nietzsche and Georg Hegel. Whilst controversy has often been part of the interaction between tradition and modernism, we shall appreciate the contest within social and cultural experience.
