Course Description

This course will explore ideas of America through short stories and selected short novels of the last thirty years. We will consider contemporary themes and the rich diversity of experience, cultures and language offered by authors whose writing contests, expands and renews American literary traditions and popular expectations. Themes discussed will include collective memory, historical trauma, identity/identities, ‘race’, 9/11, consumerism, humour and what it means to be American from a twenty-first century global perspective. A reading list will be provided in advance.
