Course Description

Alcuin of York was Master at the Minster when Charlemagne invited him to lead the school at his court, where Alcuin played a main role in the revival of studies known as Carolingian Renaissance. A prolific writer, Alcuin produced theological and dogmatic treatises, grammatical works, and poems. Charlemagne’s biographer called him ‘the most learned man anywhere to be found’. This course will explore the life of Alcuin, paying particular attention to his achievements as a major architect of the Carolingian Renaissance.
