Course Description

While the Middle Ages often evokes images of knights, castles and crusaders, this era was also an extraordinary period of cross-cultural exchange among Christians, Muslims and Jews. The visual arts survive as a testament to this time of both inter-religious cooperation and violent conflict. This course approaches this subject through the objects themselves - luxury goods, architecture, manuscripts, ceramics, tapestries and metalwork - and through the roles these objects played in trade networks, religious devotion and political relationships in the medieval era.
